SEMPER
At the heart of the first production of Ene-Liis Semper as the sole director at Theatre NO99 is a meeting between the ordinary and the extraordinary.
Beauty is undoubtedly a major fixation of the contemporary society, but it is so in quite an counter-intuitive way. In a world that talks ever more and more about equality, beauty is the essence of inequality that will never dissapear – some of us are touched by beauty and others simply are not. But although beauty is something millions and everyone yearn for, a sudden unexpected meeting with the absolute can be merciless. Meeting absolute beauty brings out the inner depth of what is inside us, of what we cannot hide, even our fear of death. In NO47 A Girl That Was Looking For Her Brothers, it is in the face of perishing that a simple family bursts into the final bloom.
Ene-Liis Semper, one of the two artistic directors of Theatre NO99, is besides her career in theatre also a visual artist who has worked extensively in video art and installations. She combines various disciplines making all of them her own and merges them into a scenic reality at the center of which is the intensity of concentrating on the poetics of the essential.
