EURIPIDES/MARSHALL

Director Lorna Marshall:

A family, national honour, a war fought on high principles. But what happens when the needs of the war machine demand the life of a child? When the honourable justification for war is a cover for greed and self interest? How do we live with the choices we make?

Euripides wrote "Iphigenia at Aulis" at the end of his life, after witnessing decades of war in Greece - victory, defeat, and the price that people pay. Sadly, what was true around 400 BC, is still true today. Certain problems never go away, it seems.

This is a powerful piece, not only in its timeless subject matter, but also in its style - Euripides was not afraid to juxtapose dark comedy against the tragedy of human choices, or to put psychological realism alongside the physical energy of the chorus.

Exciting, tragic, funny - this is a masterwork from a master writer. One which cuts to the heart of human choice.

This is the first Estonian production of the play, and the text has been translated especially for this production, giving modern audiences a chance to encounter the heroes of the ancient world - Agamemnon, Menalaos, Achilles, and Klytaimnestra.
